Nutrition

The Trotwood-Madison City School District takes pride in being able to provide much needed nutrition year-round for the children of Trotwood.

The Student Nutrition Services Department provides balanced, enjoyable meals at no charge every school day for all of our students who attend school in person.  The school day meals are served in accordance with the requirements of the School Breakfast Program and the National School Lunch Program.

For our students participating in after-school activities which include an academic component, we offer healthy suppers at no cost to the families.

During summer break we offer nutritious meals to all children in the community through the Summer Food Service Program.

Breakfast

Offering breakfast at no cost to all students has many benefits not only for the student, but also for the school and the parents.

  • Breakfast helps our students to reach their potential.  Recent studies have shown that students are better able to learn, pay attention, and perform well on tests when they consistently eat a balanced, nutritious breakfast.
  • Breakfast helps our school district improve attendance rates and test scores.  Better nutrition means a healthier immune system and can help kids fight off germs.  This means more students in class on a regular basis.  Consistent attendance leads to better-prepared students which ultimately leads to better-prepared adults.
  • Breakfast helps our parents by removing a possible financial burden.  It may not seem like much, but the cost of feeding a family breakfast each morning can really add up.

Lunch

  • Our lunches consist of an entree, vegetables, fruit, and milk.
  • We strive to prepare and serve items which the students find appealing.  In our Middle School and High School, we offer a number of additional options as a way to please the diverse eating habits of today's young adults.
  • We offer lunch every school day to about 2900 students using a system called Offer Versus Serve.  Offer Versus Serve requires that:
    • We offer a minimum number of choices (5).
    • We offer all of the food components (bread, meat/meat alternative, vegetable, fruit, and milk) to every student.
    • The student selects at least three different components.
  • Studies show that if the student is able to select their own meal, they will be more likely to eat it and, thus, get a healthy, balanced meal.
